How to Keep Healthy During Long-Haul Flights
Does your throat feel parched when you are in a long-haul flight? That is because the environment in the air is so much different from that on the ground. Here are some important tips on how to maintain your health while up in the air.
First, avoid flying if you have a recent surgery. The change in atmospheric pressure might negatively affect the healing process. Consult your physician about what to do to make your flight more bearable if you need to travel. Next, do not fly if you are suffering from a sinus infection, headache, cold, or flu because the pressure in the cabin will only make the symptoms feel worse. If you need to travel, bring in your decongestants and other remedies. It is also a good idea to apply a bit of petroleum jelly in your nasal area to avoid extra tenderness.
If you are taking medications, take all of them with you. In fact, it is better if you ask your doctor for extra prescriptions. This is especially important if you are afflicted with serious medical conditions, such as asthma and other heart and lung problems. The atmospheric pressure in the aircraft may require you to take your medicines more often. You also need to drink a lot of water and juices during flights. That is because the air is very dry in the cabin, which can dehydrate you. In connection, avoid drinking alcohol and coffee because these are diuretics, which can quickly drain you of your fluids. Finally, sitting for a long time during long-haul flights can lead to stiff joints and bloated feet. Thus, you need to get up and walk around the cabin to avoid these conditions.
